"The latest Israeli military escalation on Gaza comes within ongoing attempts by the occupation to provoke the resistance by dragging it into a military confrontation," the spokesman for Islamic Jihad's armed wing told the Palestinian news agency.
Abu Ahmad's comments came on the heels of a week in which several Qassam rockets and mortars were fired towards Israel's western Negev region from the Hamas-ruled Gaza, this after a long-period of relative calm.
Israel retaliated with a series of air strikes on Gaza.
Addressing reports of successful tests of Israel's Iron Dome rocket-intercepting system, Abu Ahmad said, "They can’t stop the projectiles of the resistance.
"The occupation's attempts will fail in weakening the spirit of resistance, and that could change the equation of the circumstances in the region," he said.
