Likud source: Mofaz may get Justice Ministry

Senior Likud official says Shaul Mofaz will become top cabinet member should he quit Kadima

Shaul Mofaz will become a top cabinet member and may be appointed as Israel's justice minister should he quit Kadima with a group of other Knesset members, a senior Likud official said Saturday.

Likud officials are closely monitoring the growing rift within main opposition party Kadima and are saying that they expect Mofaz to make a decision on his next move soon. Mofaz has threatened to leave the party should Chairwoman Tzipi Livni rejected his call for early primary elections in Kadima.

The senior Likud source said that should he quit Kadima, Mofaz will join the forum of top seven government ministers, becoming its eighth member. In addition, he may get the Justice Portfolio in place of current Minister Yaakov Ne'eman, who expressed his willingness to quit the job in the past.

"Nothing has been finalized, yet the need to find a significant post for Mofaz in the government still exists," a source close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. "We're waiting to see how many people will be joining with Mofaz. If more than seven MKs join, let's say around 10, the picture will be different."

Likud officials estimate that Mofaz will have trouble bringing half of Kadima MKs, that is,14 Knesset members, along with him. However they do believe that he has already decided to leave the party and establish a new faction.
