Grenade found under car in Jerusalem mall

Fragmentation grenade planted under vehicle belonging to Sur Baher school principal who was threatened by Palestinian elements in past

Police sappers were dispatched to Jerusalem's Malcha Mall on Tuesday afternoon, after a fragmentation grenade was discovered under a car in the shopping center's parking lot.

The police forces managed to locate the vehicle owner, who works as a school principal in the Arab neighborhood of Sur Baher in east Jerusalem and who was threatened in the past by Palestinian elements.

At around 5:30 pm, the Jerusalem Police received a call about a grenade placed under a car. The school principal had received threatening text messages before the grenade was discovered. Several months ago, he filed a complaint with the police after his car was torched by unknown assailants. The man told the police he had been threatened by Palestinian elements claiming that he was corrupt.

Gideon Avrahami, director of the Malcha Mall, told Ynet that the grenade was discovered as the mall's security guards were patrolling the parking lot.

"They apparently located a fragmentation grenade under a vehicle in one of the parking lots," he said. "The parking lot was closed to the public and the police were dispatched to evacuate the grenade. From that moment on, the entire matter was in the police's hands. The mall is still open and the other parking lots are being used."
