Biden visit to prompt traffic mayhem

Major routes to be blocked intermittently to accommodate vice president's schedule

Drivers, get ready for mayhem on roads: The Jerusalem-Tel Aviv Highway and the northbound Ayalon Highway will be blocked intermittently Thursday between 9 and 11 am as result of US Vice President Joe Biden's visit.

While Biden's convoy travels on the roads, motorists will not be able to enter the Ayalon Highway.

The vice president is scheduled to arrive at Tel Aviv University, where he will address local students. Later, he will be meeting with Defense Minister Ehud Barak, before flying to Amman, Jordan.

The news gets worse for local motorists, after police announced that major damages on the Ayalon Highway, south of Tel Aviv, will not be repaired by Thursday morning as previously expected.

As result, one of the three northbound lanes in the area will be shut down. Motorists have been advised to use different routes.

The road in question was paved relatively recently and was apparently damaged by rains that accumulated at the side of the road. Officials were unable to explain why the water was not properly drained.

As result of the damage, major traffic jams were reported in the area Wednesday afternoon, with some motorists saying it took them 75 minutes to travel from Rishon Lezion to Tel Aviv, 14 kilometers (roughly 9 miles) away.
