NY cops awarded Tony for real-life drama

Two NYPD precincts to be awarded entertainment prize for defusing Times Square car bomb

New York's police will be joining New York's acting elite when they accept a Tony for the real life drama of defusing a car bomb this month in the heart of the Broadway theater district.

Two NYPD precincts will be awarded with a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theater "in recognition of the precincts' many years of outstanding service to Manhattan's Theater District," the Tony administration committee said.

The announcement made Monday praises the two precincts for ensuring safety along the Great White Way.

On May 1 a malfunctioning car bomb was left outside a theatre showing "The Lion King" musical. Police evacuated the area in a major security operation.

Charlotte Saint Martin, director of The Broadway League, said the award had been decided on recently, but the bomb scare "brought the NYPD's skills to the forefront of a very public stage, so our desire to award them for their consistent day-to-day dedication proved even more appropriate."

The Tony Awards ceremony takes place June 13.
