Recommended IDF films of all times

The life and thoughts of an Israeli soldier serving in a field unit in the Israel Defense Forces

Over the last few weeks I have been asked by some of my readers to recommend some descent IDF-related films and books. I thought that I might share my recommendations with everyone.

So here we go:

“Beaufort” (2007) – An instant Israeli Classic based on a best-seller book. The true story of the last unit of soldiers on the legendary Beaufort outpost, fighting with Hezbollah insurgents while preparing for evacuation.

Very emotional and authentic acting and setting which give you a glimpse into the head and thoughts of an Israeli combat soldier. One of my favorite Israeli films of all time. Oscar nominee for best foreign film. Watch Trailer

“Waltz with Bashir” (2008) – The critically acclaimed Golden-Globe winner and Oscar Nominee drama of Ari Folman’s self memories from the first Lebanon War. The film uses new animation concepts and delivers a powerful experience. I watched it two times, and enjoyed it very much. Watch Trailer

“Israel’s War History” (2007) – 120 minute production covering all major conflicts, including the 2006 Second Lebanon War.

1. 1917-1948 War of Independence

2. 1948-1956 Sinai Campaign

3. 1956-1967 Six Day War

4. 1967-1973 Yom Kippur War

5. 1973-1982 Lebanon War

6. 1982-1991 Intifada & Gulf War

7. 1991-2005 Peace process and second intifada

8. 2005-2007 Disengagement and Second Lebanon War

“Kippur” (2000) – An excellent film about the 1973 Yom Kippur war in which Egypt and Syria launched coordinated attacks in Sinai and the Golan Heights. The movie tells the story of two friends on a day that begins in quiet city streets, but ends with death, destruction and devastation of both body and mind. In my opinion, probably the best Yom Kippur movie out there. Watch trailer

“Operation Thunderbolt” (Entebbe) (1977) – A true must-have! The story of the hi-jacking of the Air France flight to Uganda and the heroic resuce operation led by Yoni Netanyahu. Oscar Nominee 1978 - Best Foreign Language Film.

“Eagles over Auschwitz” (2003) - The compelling story of the historic flyover of Auschwitz-Birkenau by three Israeli F-15s. This film is shown in many occasions to IDF troops.

“Independence”-“Kedma” (2002) – set in 1941, the story of Holocaust survivors that immigrated to the still-to-come state of Israel only to take up arms and join the fight against the Arabs.

“Girls” (1985) - The story of 5 girls and their story in 4 weeks of Basic Training in the Israeli army. Stupid yet funny film, enjoyable especially when watching with friends.

Yours,

Yoav B.

P.S. There’s an excellent Israeli book called “Ekra Lecha Gever” (“I shall call you a man”) which tells the story of a combat officer during the Second Lebanon War, struggling in two fronts: Leading his troops to battle and winning the heart of a young Israeli girl. If that book is to become a movie – it would definitely be a blockbuster.
