Shin Bet arrests friend of 'Jewish terrorist'
Detained right-wing activist, 24, associated with main suspect in murder of Arabs in 1990s. Only Monday, court says not enough evidence to put Pearlman on trial
Just Monday, Petah Tikvah Magistrates' Court Judge Nachum Sternlicht ruled that the chances are slim that alleged Jewish terrorist Haim Pearlman, suspected of murdering four Palestinians, will be put on trial due to insufficient evidence. Subsequently, the police and the Shin Bet arrested another suspect in the case, a 24-year-old right-wing activist from Tekoa considered to be friends with Pearlman.
In response to the arrest, Pearlman's associates told Ynet, "The Shin Bet do not know how to lose with honor. It was clear to us that following the court's admonitions on Monday, the Shin Bet would do everything to show developments in the case, including last-minute dirty tricks."
Because of the court's ruling, Pearlman's remand was only extended by two days. He is suspected of murdering four Arabs and attempting to murder seven others and even of being part of a terrorist cell.
"With all due respect, I did not find any real progress made in the investigation in establishing and collecting new evidence," wrote Judge Sternlicht. "Therefore, a much smaller time period than what the police are requesting will do."
