Kadima refuses as yet unmade coalition offer

Opposition party taking for granted it will be called to join gov't, say offer would be 'glib, cynical'

The leading Opposition party is taking for granted that the prime minister will call on them to join the coalition, and have already said that such an offer is "glib and cynical".

Kadima officials close to Livni said on Tuesday that "we are taking into account the possibility of a proposal from Netanyahu to join the current coalition".

The officials made their statements ahead of a planned meeting between Livni and Netanyahu on Thursday, which has been classified as a security briefing. Sources close to the prime minister have stated that "at this time, a proposal is not on the cards, but it is too early to foresee the meeting's topics".

The possibility of Kadima joining the coalition has become a foreseeable option, when taking into consideration the disagreement between Netanyahu and the Yisrael Beiteinu party over the possibility of resuming the settlement construction freeze – along with the Labor Party's threats to withdraw from the coalition if political negotiations with the Palestinians do not resume.

That said, Netanyahu might be cheered by the fact that his other coalition partner, Shas, has stated that it would not withdraw from the coalition over the construction freeze issue.
