From Germany to Israel in pictures – part 6

In 1948, during the War of Independence, Dr. Rudy Goldstein served in an IDF medical unit. At the end of war, he returned to his work at Afula hospital. In the last part of this series, we also bring you pictures from snowy winter of 1950

1. Rudy's medical unit had various transportation and evacuation means. In this photo, taken in May 1948 near Hulda, a stretcher has been installed on a mule to carry the injured

2. There were jeeps as well. In the photo: August 15, 1948. While driving on Burma Road, one can also see the water line to Jerusalem, which was the only one to supply the city with water after the Latrun pumping station was bombed at the start of the war

3. Burma Road, September 14, 1948, near the destroyed village of Beit Susin. The name of the place was changed to Einot Susin, and the Jewish National Fund built a parking lot there

4. Burma Road, September 14, 1948, Einot Susin (today near Moshav Taoz on Road 44, the road taken to Jerusalem before Road 1 was paved)

5. November 9, 1948. Folding up a medical evacuation spot in an olive grove near Lod

6. March 8, 1949. Brigade 9's discharge day (photo may indicate that Rudy was in Brigade 9)

7-10. After he was discharged, Dr. Rudy resumed his work at the Afula hospital. In the winter of 1950, in February, there was heavy snow in the valley. The hospital and the medical staff were covered with snow
