Maccabi's Mike Mitchell dies at 55

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv mourns passing of former player after battle with cancer, say Mitchell's 1991-1992 run left deep impression on basketball club

The management of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv mourned the passing of former Maccabi player Mike Mitchell, who died early Friday morning at the age of 55 after a two-year battle with cancer.

Mitchell played for Maccabi for one season in 1991-1992, during which his team won the Israeli championship and reached the quarterfinal of the championship in Europe.

Before his Maccabi days, Mitchell played for the NBA for ten seasons, with averages of 19.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. When playing for the San Antonio Spurs he scored 9,799 points, enough to earn him sixth place in the team’s list of the highest scorers of all time. Mitchell later played in Europe.

He had retired at age 46 after a 22 year-run of his professional basketball career.

On the basketball club's website, the team’s manager, Doron Jamchy - who played for Maccabi with Mitchell - expressed his deep grief over the sad news, saying, “Mike will always be remembered as professional and magnanimous, a good friend and a role model.”
