Israeli students won five medals, one gold and four bronze, in the 52nd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which concluded in Amsterdam on Friday.
The gold medal was won by Rom Dudkevitch of the Blich High School in Ramat Gan. Guy Raveh of the Leo Baeck School in Haifa, Yoav Krauss of the Katzir School in Holon, Tom Ferster of the Ostrovsky School in Raanana and Constantine Zabrani of the Ironi Hei School in Haifa all took home a bronze medal.
Following the impressive achievement, Israel jumped 30 spots in the global ranking to the 23rd place out of 101 countries which took part in the event. This is Israel's best accomplishment in the past seven years.
Another Achievement
Israeli physics team wins two gold, silver medals, one bronze medal at IPO for high school students in Thailand. Israel now ranks 13th in world
"It's an excellent feeling and a lot of fun," said Raveh. "The competition was tough and we were under a lot of pressure. For two days we were given a series of tests, each lasting four and a half hours, but fortunately we succeeded. Now we'll return to Israel and take a rest from mathematics."
The instructor and head of the Israeli delegation, Lev Radislevsky, added: "We are very proud. We have a very talented team and we believed we would have great achievements in the Olympiad."
Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar congratulated Radislevsky at the end of the competition.
"You represent Israel respectfully and reached impressive achievements," said Sa'ar. He said he was certain that "Israel's accomplishments in future Olympiads will only grow in light of the change in perception in terms of the preparations and the prominence given to reaching achievements, especially in science."
The Education Ministry noted that the accomplishments in the recent physics and math Olympiads were the result of a change in conception, which was expressed in the systematic and strenuous preparations for the competitions.
