A special exhibition at the Diamond Museum in Ramat Gan attempts to solve the ancient mystery.
According to Yehuda Kassif, the Diamond Museum's curator and art director, diamonds came from aristocracy and monarchy and associate their owners with that world.
"When you take into consideration their beauty, magic and radiance, you have the ultimate prestigious product," he says.
Eli Avidar, managing director at the Israel Diamond Institute Group (IDI), explains that a diamond does not have a temporary value like a pen or anything else: "It is very significant if you inherit a diamond ring that belonged to your grandmother's grandmother."
Various African jewelry designs are exhibited in the Diamond Museum, combining diamonds and gold worth about $3.5 million.
One of the more important pieces of jewelry in the exhibit, says Kassif, is a very expensive jewel that is worth about $1 million. It contains 507 grams of gold and about 4,000 diamonds weighing 85 carats.
