Teva UK launches generic Glaucoma drops
Latanoprost treatment has $700 million annual sales volume in US. Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that lead to permanent damage of optic nerve
Teva Pharmaceutical Industries announced Wednesday that its subsidiary Teva UK would be launching the generic version of Latanoprost eye drops for the treatment of Glaucoma.
In 2010, the treatment had a $700 million annual sales volume in the United States.
"As the leading generics company in the country, Teva continues to develop its business portfolio," Teva UK said in a statement.
"Latanoprost is our inaugural product launch for 2012 and is expected to lower costs for users of the treatment."
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions which cause permanent damage to the optic nerve including damages to the field of vision and even total blindness. The condition is usually attributed to increased intraocular pressure although it can appear under normal conditions as well.
The most common condition is related to blockages in the flow of the intraocular fluid. Latanoprost increases the flow by up to 60%, thereby relieving intraocular pressure and decreasing the risk of Glaucoma damages.
