Israeli Judoka banned from Grand Prix over theft charges
Soso Palelashvili arrested on suspicion of stealing toothpaste in Germany lands in Israel, denies theft allegations
Israeli Judoka Soso Palelashvili returned to Israel Sunday after being disqualified from the Judo Grand Prix in Dusseldorf, Germany. He was banned after being suspected of stealing toothpaste from a supermarket in Dusseldorf. Before exiting the terminal, he was held for a routine check in customs.
When asked about the incident, Palelashvili explained that in order to pay separately for personal items in the supermarket he put the toothpaste in his pocket, but had no intention to steal it.
"I am not guilty of any theft" he clarified, "I bought other stuff worth €80 for which I paid."
Palelashvili was "caught" by a German woman who called the police. Unable to understand the policemen he was arrested, and released only after Israeli national team coach Oren Smadja paid the €400 fine.
When asked about the incident, Palelashvili said: "It was a very important match for me. I think I should have participated." He adedd, "I wish to continue to represent Israel."
The 25-year-old Judoka was in Germany for one of the last tournaments before the 2012 London Olympics.
