Romney: Obama re-election means nuclear Iran

US Republican presidential candidate accuses president of failing to address Islamic Republic's nuclear threat

WASHINGTON – Shortly after US President Barack Obama addressed the AIPAC conference on Sunday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney slammed the leader for not doing enough to address Iran's nuclear threat.

"If Barack Obama is re-elected, Iran will have a nuclear weapon," Romney, who is campaigning in Georgia ahead of Tuesday's Republican primaries, said in a speech.

Romney accused Obama of failing to adequately communicate to the Islamic Republic "that military options are on the table and in fact in our hand, and that it's unacceptable to America for Iran to have a nuclear weapon."

The former Massachusetts governor presented his own plan of action: "I will have those military options. I will take those crippling sanctions and put them into place," he said.

"And I will speak out to the Iranian people of the peril of them becoming nuclear …. I'm not willing to allow your generation to have to worry about a threat from Iran or anyone else that nuclear material be used against Americans."

'Nuclear Iran – second Holocaust'

Addressing the violent developments in Syria, Romney said that as of yet he does not favor "direct military intervention" in that country.

"(…) We should be doing everything in our power to encourage those that are looking for freedom in Syria," he stated. " That could include covert activities of various kinds, it could include working with the Turks and the Saudis who are very anxious also to put pressure on Syria to take a change in course."

In comments before Obama's speech, Republican candidate Newt Gingrich leveled critcism at Obama as well, saying he saw no evidence the president would do what it took to keep Iran from getting nuclear arms.

"They talk and the Iranians build," Gingrich said. "We're being played for fools."

Gingrich told CNN no Israeli leader could allow Iran to become nuclear.

“Israel is such a small country; it is so compact that two or three nuclear weapons would be equivalent to a second Holocaust,” he said.
