An artificial spider web may soon become the hottest thing in agricultural pest control. The SpiderNet – a special weave of micro-fibers developed by Israeli company Meteor Nets – will be featured in the upcoming Argitech 2012 expo, set for May. According to the company, SpiderNet is made to catch tiny insects, in the same way that real cobwebs trap them. SpiderNet is said to create a "blanket of protection" around agricultural crops and while it allows air and sunlight to flow through freely, its micro-fibers can ensnare even the smallest pests. Meteor Nets said it will also introduce another innovation in Argitech 2012 – a new "anti-virus" system meant to protect crops from various bacterial infections that pests may transfer to plants. Meteor Nets said that SpiderNet will allow farmers to use fewer pesticides, which are not only harmful to the end consumer – but pest have been proven to build up resistance to them over time.
