Qualcomm Acquires Israel's DesignArt

Leading manufacturers of CDMA-based smartphone chipsets to acquire Israeli DesignArt, leader in small cell modems and system design for cellular base stations, high-speed wireless backhaul infrastructure

San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc. one of the leading manufacturers of CDMA-based smartphone chipsets, announced that it is acquiring Israel's DesignArt, a leader in small cell modems and system design for cellular base stations and high-speed wireless backhaul infrastructure.

Based in Ra'anana, DesignArt offers system-on-chip (SoC) and software products that enable the design of indoor and outdoor small cell base stations and remote radio heads, which allow operators to expand the data capacity of their networks in a simple and cost-effective manner.

DesignArt’s technology also offers integrated line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight wireless backhaul to reduce the cost of outdoor small cell deployments

This will be Qualcomm's second acquisition in Israel following the buyout of mobile web company iSkoot in 2010.

Qualcomm is expected to pay anywhere between $120 to $140 million to purchase DesignArt Networks.

“DesignArt and its products will both enhance and accelerate our initiatives to drive increased capacity and coverage in mobile networks,” said Craig Barratt, president of Qualcomm Atheros.

“Operators can significantly improve user experience across residential, enterprise and outdoor networks given the greater network efficiencies derived by implementing small cells and heterogeneous networks,” he added.

Qualcomm Inc. designs, develops, and supplies semiconductors and collects royalties on wireless handheld devices and infrastructure based on its dominant position in CDMA and other related technology patents.
