Report: Palestinian PM retracts resignation

Hamdallah meets Palestinian President Abbas, leaves with official entourage; Palestinian sources say it's a sign he'll remain in office

Unofficial reports from the Palestinian Authority reveal that Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah retracted his intention to resign.

Hamdallah met in Ramallah on Friday evening with President Mahmoud Abbas for two hours and left without giving a formal statement.

Nevertheless, in the Palestinian Authority some claim his leaving the Muqata, the government compound, with his official entourage means he will remain in office.

On Thursday a Palestinian official told Ynet that Hamdallah decided to present his resignation after harsh disputes developed between him and his two deputies, Mahmad Mustafa and Ziad Abu Amr, and he angrily left his office in his private vehicle, not his state one.

The two deputies are associated with President Mahmoud Abbas. So far no official statement was issued regarding the resignation from the Palestinian President's Office or from the Prime Minister's Office.

The Palestinian cabinet spokesperson said on Thursday that Hamdallah's unexpected resignation was due to his deputies undermining of his authority.

Hamdallah was appointed to the role on June 2, and his first cabinet meeting was held only nine days ago.

Before his current position, Hamdallah was the president of the An-Najah University in Nablus.

Hamdallah's predecessor, Salam Fayyad, resigned last April following a conflict with President Abbas.

In an interview a month later to The New York Times, Fayyad discussed the short history of the Palestinian Authority and said it is "a story of failed leadership, from way early on.

"It is incredible that the fate of the Palestinian people has been in the hands of leaders so entirely casual, so guided by spur-of-the-moment decisions, without seriousness," he added.
