Tribute to Israeli duo Golan-Globus to be screened at Cannes

Documentary on two cousins who made it in Hollywood with Cannon Films included in international film festival's Cannes Classics lineup.

Good news for Israeli cinema keeps pouring in from Cannes. After the inclusion of several representatives of the new generation of Israeli filmmakers in the international film festival's different sidebars, the festival's organizers announced Wednesday that documentary film "The Go-Go Boys," about Israeli filmmaking duo Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, has made it into the prestigious Cannes Classics lineup.

The film, directed by director and producer Hilla Medalia, tells the inside story of the two top Israeli producers and cousins, who grabbed a nice market share in the Hollywood market with Cannon Films, the company they founded in the 1980s and abandoned in 1989.

In the 10 years they led the Cannon company, the duo produced hundreds of films, mostly action and fantasy movies, and nurtured action stars like Chuck Norris, Sylvester Stallone and Michael Dudikoff. The hits their company distributed included "The Delta Force," "American Ninja," "Missing in Action," "Kickboxer" and "Lady Chatterley's Lover," as well as the failed superhero movies "Superman IV" and "Captain America."

"The Go-Go Boys" looks into the complex relationship between the two men who went through many ups and downs while working together and shared a relationship filled with contradictions, which eventually led to a split.

The documentary includes archive footage from their film productions as well as interviews with leading figures from the world of cinema in Israel and in the United States, including actors Sylvester Stallone, Jon Voight and Charles Bronson.

"Our inclusion in the Cannes Classics category is a huge honor for the Israeli cinema," says Yariv Horowitz, who produced the film together with Roy Lev. "There is no doubt that Globus and Golan deserve a place of honor in the hall of fame of world cinema as their activity in the industry, and especially in regards to the model of funding independent films, affected the entire industry and allowed the creation of quite a few cinema hits."

The film, which is in its final editing stages, will be distributed in Israel next year and will debut at Cannes.

While this year there are no Israeli candidates for the Palme d'Or, the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival, several Israeli filmmakers have made it to the different sidebars. Director Keren Yedaya's film "Harcheck mi Headro" will be screened as part of the Un Certain Regard (a particular outlook) section, and Inbar Horesh's film "The Visit" will be presented as part of the Short Films section.

Israeli director Nadav Lapid is set for a debut screening of his new film, "The Kindergarten Teacher," as part of Cannes' Critics Week sidebar next month, alongside Shira Geffen's new film, "Self Made."

In addition, "Gett: Le proces de Viviane Amsalem" by Shlomi and Ronit Elkabetz and "Next to Her" from Asaf Korman will be screened in the 46th annual Directors’ Fortnight sidebar.
