Walk about Tel Aviv with Jane's Walk

Global event 'Jane's Walk' reaches Israel, and two of the tours will be held in English; join locals to learn about Bauhaus architecture in Tel Aviv, or the city's budding artistic south, with a tour in wake of galleries.

The global phenomenon 'Jane's Walk' is headed to Israel for its annual festival, planned to take place this weekend during May 1-3. As part of the event, participants will be lead on walking tours, designed to engage residents and familiarize them with their neighborhoods, and this year two of the tours in Tel Aviv will be given in English.

The event is held in honor of the work of American-Canadian author and activist Jane Jacobs, best known for her influence on urban studies and the terms "eyes on the street" and "social capital".

In addition to the two English tours, over 40 various tours will be conducted in Hebrew and Arabic, and will take participants through local neighborhoods to explore the history, culture, architecture, and societal trends that make up Israel's cities.

Hosted by volunteers from the world of politics, art, and others, the event is free for all who wish to take part and walks will be held in Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv, Jaffa, Beer Sheba, Beit Shemesh, Bat Yam, Arad, Ashdod, Kfar Saba, Rehovot, and the neighborhood of Tel-Aviv's Central Bus Station.

One tour for English speakers in Tel-Aviv will explore the city's famous Bauhaus architecture which earned the metropolis the nick-name 'The White City'.

A press release from 'Jane's Walk' said that the "tour is for all those who are a little bit more interested in architecture." Any who wish to participate can meet at 46 Rothschild Blvd. on May 3 at 11:00am.

Another English tour will meander through southern Tel-Aviv to find the art galleries that are currently booming there, while guides will discuss the affect the south has had on art and why local artists have been migrating there in growing numbers.

Participants can meet their guide at 117 Herzl Street in front of the Contemporary Art Gallery at 10:00am on May 2 and the Jane's Walk website says that the guide will be wearing a green hat.

This year marks the 4th global Jane's Walk festival, as well as its first appearance in Israel. The walks first began in 2007 in North America honoring activist and author Jacobs, known for her attempts to protect small neighborhoods from modernization.

Walks expanded internationally in 2009 when participants explored the streets of Mumbai, India and in 2011 in Madrid.
