Israeli movie wins best foreign film at Student Academy Awards

'Paris on the Water,' written and directed by Tel Aviv University's Hadas Ayalon, is one of three winners. This is first time TAU receives honor from academy.

"Paris on the Water," a movie by Israeli director Hadas Ayalon, is one of three winners in the foreign film category of the 2014 Student Academy Awards.

The movie tells the story of Batya Shaaltiel, an actress whose heyday is long since gone. After years of being professionally frustrated, Bayta gets a chance to make a comeback in a new German film with a famous director. But an unexpected incident on the day of the audition forces her to deal with her husband, and the priorities in her life.

Ayalon, who also wrote the script, is a masters student at Tel Aviv University's Department of Film and Television. While this is not the first time TAU students have been nominated for the award, this is the first time one of the department's movies win.

The winners, who were announced Friday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will arrive in Los Angeles for a week of industry activities, at the end of which they will receive the award at a ceremony on June 7.

The winners of each category will be granted either a gold, silver or bronze medal - the placement of which will be announced at the awards ceremony.

"Paris on the Water" has also been nominated for an Ofir Prize, given by the Israeli Film Academy.
