Planes resume Tel Aviv flyovers

Runways with operations that cross over the coastal city were closed down during Protective Edge to avoid possibility of collisions with Gaza rockets.

After a month and a half in which airplanes were barred from flying over the first Hebrew city, Ben Gurion International Airport has resumed its normal operations, servicing two landing strips that cross over Tel Aviv and the Sharon area.

Takeoffs from the airport, which were scheduled from Runway 26 – running west to east – during Operation Protective Edge in order to stay out of rocket range, had returned to regular operations two weeks ago, before the first Gaza ceasefire collapsed.

The flight plans were altered for takeoffs and landing at Ben Gurion to prevent the possibility of hostile rockets crossing paths with civilian airplanes; during the operation a number of rockets were intercepted in the airport's airspace.

The runway servicing flights that cross over Tel Aviv began operating earlier in the year, leading to mass complaints from local residents. The protest movement against the new runway is expected to resume with its return to operations.
