Peres Center turns pink for breast cancer awareness

Wearing a pink tie, former president Shimon Peres launches International Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Israel in bid to encourage women to get checked for the disease and increase early detection.

The Peres Center for Peace in Jaffa turned pink Monday evening in honor of International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is marked in countries around the world every October.

The center was lit up in pink by former President Shimon Peres, who put on a tie in the same color for the occasion, as part of a joint initiative of the Companies in Israel and the Israel Cancer Association.

Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign was founded in 1992 with the launch of the Pink Ribbon, the universal symbol for breast health, in a bid to defeat breast cancer through education and medical research. The campaign aims to women to get checked for the disease and increase early detection.

This year, the Israel Cancer Association and the Estée Lauder Companies are launching the Pink Shirt project. A black shirt for both women and men with the caption "This is a pink shirt" will be sold for NIS 49.90 (about $13.5), and all proceeds will go to the Israel Cancer Association.

The shirts can be purchased in all MAC and Bobbi Brown stores across Israel, as well as on the DrugStore and Time Out store websites.

"The project has one goal, which is the most important goal: To remind all women in Israel that early detection saves lives," said Oren Revach, general manager of the Estée Lauder Companies in Israel. "This year, the project allows men and women to walk around with a shirt serving as a stylish and fashionable reminder of the recommended medical examination.

"In addition, anyone who buys the shirt will feel part of the Israel Cancer Association's activity through the donation transferred in their name."

Israel Cancer Association Director-General Director General Miri Ziv said the organization "leads the battle against breast cancer on all fronts, starting from research, advancing prevention and early detection to improving patients' treatment and recovery. Estée Lauder's willingness to join the battle against breast cancer is highly appreciated and strengthens our activity on the national and international level."
