Two 19-year-olds, a man and a woman, were found wounded in a school in Netanya on Saturday morning in what is believed to be a suicide attempt.
The two are believed to have tried to take their own lives because their respective parents objected their desire to wed.
The man is suspected of stabbing his girlfriend, lightly wounding her in the chest. When she started bleeding and the boyfriend thought she was about to die, he went up on the school's roof and stabbed himself, seriously wounding himself.
The girlfriend then called Magen David Adom paramedics called to the scene, and those gave the two initial treatment and evacuated them to Laniado Hospital in the city.
Police arrived at the scene and opened an investigation into the incident, questioning the girlfriend who told them what had happened, and arresting the boyfriend. If his medical condition permits it, the boyfriend will be brought for a remand extension on Saturday night.
The two have been together a long while and recently got engaged. But when they sought the blessing of their parents, they were turned down.
"The circumstances of this incident are very unfortunate. Be that as it may, we're still treating the incident very gravely as this is a case of violence between partners," said Netanya's police commander.
