State employees warned of WhatsApp cyber attack

Alert expresses fears 'cyber warfare' could involve pro-Palestinian hackers targeting Israeli computers, tablets, smartphones; civil servants urged not to open attachments on Whatsapp.

Security officers and data security managers in government ministries and public organizations issued a warning Friday to all civil servants in Israel about an expected hacking attack by the Anonymous group.

Ynet received a copy of the alert, which expressed fears that the "cyber warfare" could involve pro-Palestinian hackers targeting Israeli computers, tablets, and smartphones. Employees were urged not to open attached files on Whatsapp or accept suspect friend requests on Facebook.

"You should be cautious of any suspicious activity on office computers, personal computers, tablets, and smartphones," said the warning. "Don't open unusual e-mails containing attachments, which may contain viruses or malware. Don't be tempted to open suspicious links.

"Beware of suspicious friend requests on social networks. Avoid opening attachments on Whatsapp, text messages, and MMS messages. If there's any concern, immediately report it to a security manager according to protocol."

In a video recently uploaded by Anonymous, a metallic voice delivered a message. "We call on the Anonymous collective and elite hacking groups to join us in a crusade and open another cyber-war against Israel. This Friday, Israel will notice you on her servers and in her homes. It will be a day of solidarity with the resistance."
