Accident kills Israeli tour guide in Romania

Noam Avnon, 46, a tour guide who frequently assisted in rescue operations, drowns while trying to rescue an Israeli during a trek.

Noam Avnon, 46, an Israeli tour guide and who assisted in many rescues with the Magnus International Search and Rescue, drowned to death on Tuesday during a hike in Romania's Făgăraș Mountain range.

According to the Associated Press, severe weather affected the area. An official source from Romania's rescue teams said Avnon was traveling with another three Israelis and died when he tried to help one of them.

Avnon's parents, Shmuel and Ofra, plan to fly to Romania and bring his coffin home. "He wanted very much for us to come see him on the weekend and we couldn't come," Shmuel told Ynet. "And now it turns out that we are going to bring him back to Israel."

Avnon's parents said they had spoken to their son three days before his death, and that he frequently worked to rescue Israelis and other tourists stranded in Romania.

"He was a hero," said Ofra. "He helped rescue Israelis and tourists many times and often worked with Magnus. He drowned trying to save someone who disappeared underwater."

Hilik Magnus, the founder of Magnus International Search and Rescue, and a friend of Avnon's, said: "I am in shock and haven't processed it. He was an indescribably wonderful guy. He made tremendous efforts to rescue Israel and was our representative in Romania."

Magnus called the drowning "a terrible tragedy."
