3 stranded motorcyclists rescued from Judean Desert

The holidaymakers got lost and reached a point of physical exhaustion; the police's volunteer search and rescue unit used thermal imaging and a helicopter to locate them.

Police helicopters and thermal cameras were used on the night between Saturday and Sunday to located and rescue three motorcyclists who lost their way on an excursion in the Judean Desert and had reached a point of physical exhaustion.

 

 

Overnight, the Shai District Police search and rescue unit received a report of three motorcyclists lost in the Nahal Tekoa region without navigational equipment. Volunteers from the unit began searching the area and requested the assistance of a helicopter.

The chopper's thermal camera aids in the detection of persons in darkness. In the recording provided by the police of this particular thermal camera, the pilot can be heard identifying three persons. This information was relayed to the command post, and the riders received medical attention before being evacuated.

A police official said, "We ask the public wishing to travel the country to do so intelligently, to bring appropriate clothing and sufficient water, to check the weather forecast, and to prepare a route appropriate for the physical ability of all those included in the trip."
