Navigation app Waze will soon be adding more obscure and lesser-known sites to its maps as part of an initiative by the Ministry for the Development of the Negev and Galilee, which seeks to popularize tourist attractions in the Negev and Galilee regions.
The initiative is part of a larger campaign set to map the country's periphery towns. The ministry hopes to bring more members of the public to the lesser-known historical sites in the south and north, and believes that having these sites on the popular navigation app is a step forward in this regard.
The project will include the ministry's logo appearing on the Waze map whenever drivers come close to one of hundreds of attractions and hidden sites. The list includes Jewish heritage sites, historical sites, militarily important spots, museums, and more.
The ministry is set to pay Waze about NIS 175,000 a year for its cooperation.
Minister for the Development of the Negev and Galilee Aryeh Deri (who also serves as interior minister) said of the project, "The Negev and Galilee are rich with tourist attractions, some well known and some less so. The goal is that travelers and tourists should be able to easily discover the hidden places by way of the ministry's logo… which will appear on their mobile phones. I am certain that the travelers will discover amazing places, historical and fun, and together we will develop tourism in the Negev and Galilee."
