The opening of the school year on Thursday will be particularly special for Israel and Miriam of Kibbutz Shluhot as both their granddaughter and great-grandson will start the first grade—in the same class.
Israel, 78, and Miriam, 76, have been living in Kibbutz Shluhot in the Beit She'an Valley in northern Israel for 60 years. They have six children, 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
"Uriya is our great-grandson from Yonatan, our eldest grandson," Israel explains. "And Galiya is my granddaughter."
The two will attend the Shaked elementary school in Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu.
"I'm very excited and happy to be with Uriya in the same class," Galiya says. "He's sort of like my cousin. Or am I his aunt?" she wonders.
Israel will accompany the children on their first day of school, but Miriam will have to miss it.
"I work with the turkey chicks six days a week," she explains.
