Path used by terrorists gets an upgrade

A path connecting the village of Azzun to the main road leading to Ma'ale Shomron, which was used by terrorists to firebomb a car wounding then 11-year-old Ayala Shapira and her father, is being paved and upgraded by Palestinians; 'It hurts to see that the Ministry of Defense and the Civil Administration hasn't learned a thing.'

On December 25, 2014, terrorists from the Azzun village made their way along a dirt road and threw a Molotov cocktail at a passing Israeli vehicle on a connecting road. Ayala Shapira, then 11 years old, was seriously burnt and still suffers from the injury today. The path that the terrorists travelled is now being paved, upgraded and turned into a road by the Palestinians.

The attack occurred at night when Ayala returned home to Ma'ale Shomron with her father after attending a class for gifted students.

Terrorists from Azzun ambushed the car and threw a Molotov cocktail at it, causing it to burst into flames. Ayala managed to get out of the car and roll on the ground in an attempt to put out the flames engulfing her. She was hospitalized in critical condition suffering from burns and trauma.

Ayala's family and other area residents expected security forces to close the path out of fear that more terrorists would use it to carry out attacks. However, residents were surprised to find out that instead of destroying the path, Palestinians are currently working to pave it and turn it into a road instead.

As a result, residents have contacted attorney Boaz Arazi to get in touch with the Civil Administration and demand an immediate halt to the construction. According to residents, not only is the road a terror path, the work is encroaching upon Israeli territory and endangering the nearby settlement of Elmatan.

Shomron Regional Council head Yossi Dagan said, "It hurts to see that the Ministry of Defense and the Civil Administration hasn't learned a thing. Illegal construction and taking over land continues unabated, and even worse, there is now a road endangering Israeli residents in the area."

Ayala's parents, Avner and Ruth Shapira, have also expressed anger and frustration at the development. "Instead of learning from this and taking the necessary security steps, there is now an illegal road connecting to Azzun," the said.

The Civil Administration responded by saying, "The work was conducted in order to repair a Palestinian path used for agriculture, which was damaged during paving on the road to Elmatan. Next week a patrol will be organized to examine the issue."
