Almog Dror

'A child shouldn't grow up like this'

She has a lot of dreams and she tries to always smile, but Almog Dror knows that when you have nothing—it's not so easy changing the world.

In cooperation with the Latet organization.

How do you explain to a six-year-old girl that you can't buy her anything because there's simply no money? Almog Dror's parents divorced when she was six, and since then her family's economic situation has only gotten worse.

She quickly learned that she can't just ask for everything she wants, because there is no money to buy it and every shekel they have is needed to buy food.

"From a child's point of view, it's impossible to fix the whole world," she says.

"You can only fix your own world," she adds, dreaming big and hoping that one day she could realize those dreams.

According to a report by the National Insurance Institute from early 2014, 18.8 percent of families in Israel—some 243,000 families—suffer from food insecurity, which is defined in the developed countries as "infrequent access to food in a satisfying amount that allows for a healthy and active life."

About 10 percent of these families suffer from a light-to-moderate food insecurity, while 8.6 percent suffer from considerable food insecurity.

The recent alternative poverty report by NGO Latet, which was released at the end of 2015, showed that a quarter of children to parents who rely on support from aid groups have gone to sleep hungry several times a month, while 36 percent of the children had to get a job to help with their family's finances.

The report also found a 45 percent increase in the number of children who had to move to a youth hostel, while the number of elderly citizens who could not afford nutritious meals has doubled in 2015.

According to Latet, 200,000 families in Israel need the organization's help during the holidays. The aid group is calling on the public to donate meals for those who can't afford it by calling *6833 (from an Israeli landline or mobile) or by visiting Latet's website .
