TAU alumni event

Volunteering and connecting with China among new TAU alumni initiatives

A recent event put on by the Tel Aviv University Alumni Organization saw the president of the university announce an initiative to strengthen the connections between TAU alumni in Israel and in China; additionally, certain TAU courses will have a community service component, enabling students to effect and contribute to Israeli society.

The Porter Building which normally holds environmental science classes at Tel Aviv University (TAU) was turned into the festive location for the Tel Aviv University Alumni Organization's most recent event last week.

The event saw the heads of the Alumni Organization and the university announce new alumni initiatives, such as strengthening the connection between Israeli and Chinese TAU alumni, and including a community service component into several of the courses.

The event began when the head of the Alumni Organization, Sigalit ben Hiyon, introduced TAU researchers to have a discussion about their various fields of study—melanoma, PTSD, and genetics research—and the way that TAU enabled them to pursue these fields.

During the evening, University President Dr. Joseph Klafter announced the formation of a joint forum between notable Israeli and Chinese alumni who have gone on to become leaders in their fields in both countries.

They will be able to connect with each other to work on joint international ventures via the forum. Klafter noted that his university has a large international presence and maintains strong connections with different leading political and academic institutions in China.

Furthermore, Alumni Organization head Sigal Eder announced an initiative which will see TAU alumni integrate and volunteer with the Israeli community as a whole. Starting in the upcoming school year, TAU will start offering courses which include a community service component as part of the bachelor's degree program.

It is estimated that there will be approximately 200,000 combined hours of volunteering done by the students with approximately 50,000 children as a part of the initiative.

The event saw famous Tel Aviv University alumni such as Teva CEO Erez Vigodman, Supreme Court Justice Yoram Danzinger and Golan Telecom CEO Oren Most join in to welcome the announcements and to re-connect with their old classmates.
