Search for missing soldier resumed after 19 years
IDF soldier Guy Hever disappeared from his base 19 years ago and never returned; a new search is now being carried out to locate him in the Golan Heights; theories as to his disappearance range from murder to kidnapping to suicide.
The search for IDF soldier, Guy Hever who went missing 19 years ago has been renewed following new information received by the Ministry of Defense.
The search for Hever will focus on the Golan Heights and hills surrounding the Jordan river in the area close to Har'am base.
Hever was last reported leaving his base in August 1997 and was never seen since. His friends serving with him on his base say that the last time that they saw him he was by the snack machines while wearing his uniform, and in possession of his weapon.
Soldiers, police, and civilian search and rescue teams are currently searching for the missing soldier in areas which were already combed over before, despite there being no sign of his last time.
"Different units are concentrating their joint efforts in the hope that there will be new findings which will help shed light on the issue," the IDF said in a statement.
Search parties will be out in full force until Wednesday night, fanning across stretches of land hoping to find traces of Hever.
Prior to going missing, Hever, who was was 20 years old at the time, served in the artillery corps. His soldier ID number is 5210447 and efforts to locate him are carried out every few years.
There are many theories as to the causes of his disappearance, including one which posits that he was kidnapped and smuggled into Syria. His commanders, on the other hand, believe he may have committed suicide as he was about to be court-martialed. Others believe he was murdered, and that his body was disposed of in the mountains.
