Shaked scolds opposition over vote of no confidence

As opposition parties submit vote of no confidence ahead of preliminary reading of newly-drafted Regulation Bill, Ayelet Shaked says they ‘declare the death of democracy frequently; leave your villa and take a walk in the jungle.’

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Bayit Yehudi) slammed opposition parties in the Knesset on Monday evening for submitting a vote of no confidence in the government over the issue of the Regulation Bill, set to be brought before the Knesset on Monday night for its preliminary reading.

The vote of no confidence, put forth by the Zionist Union, Meretz and the Joint List, failed by a margin of 42-58 but evoked a seething response from the justice minister who attacked the left-wing parties, accusing them of declaring the “death of democracy” or at least its destruction at any given moment.

The vote of no confidence comes at a particularly sensitive time for Shaked’s political ilk, given that the most recent draft of the bill, which includes the removal of the controversial Clause 7 demanding a solution to the evacuation of Amona despite a previous ruling by the High Court of Justice, is set to be brought before a Ministerial Committee for Legislation on Monday night before being voted on in yet another preliminary Knesset reading.

"Death notices like no confidence motions that lament the death of an idea are very common here. The death of Zionism has been declared at least once every quarter, and the end of the Jewish state is declared once every month or two. But a special place in these death notices is reserved, of course, to those who lament the premature passing of the Israeli democracy,” Shaked said.

“The votes of no confidence on the issue of the Regulation Bill which are submitted by Meretz and the Zionist Union which are dubbed ‘the destruction of democracy’ are part of the same familiar campaign of obituaries but the truth is that the entire public sees it,” she lambasted her political opponents from the podium. “It sees and understands that these obituaries that you carry are no more than political campaign posters. This is a campaign where you seek the concept of democracy for specific party camps.”

Shaked continued her diatribe, essentially urging the opposition parties to accept that they are out of touch with both the world and the Israeli public.

“You lose in the elections but are unable to do the required introspection. Maybe something isn’t up to date about you? Perhaps the outlook of the world is inappropriate for the Israeli public? Perhaps you could leave your villas for a moment and take a walk in the jungle?”

Earlier in the day, during a forum of coalition party leaders, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the redrafted version of the Regulation Bill without Clause 7 will be brought before the Knesset for yet another preliminary reading on Monday evening.
