Former MK suspected of receiving bribes from businessman

Former MK was arrested and questioned on suspicion of bribery, fraud and breach of trust; among other things, he is suspected of receiving sexual benefits in return for promoting the businessman's interests while still in office; 'There is reasonable evidence that links the suspect to the actions attributed to him,' says the judge in the case.

A former MK was questioned under caution on Wednesday morning on suspicion of receiving bribes from a businessman in return for promoting his interests while the MK was in office.

The MK, who is suspected of bribery, fraud and breach of trust, was arrested following questioning on suspicion of, among other things, receiving sexual benefits in return for his services.

In an effort to clear his name, the former MK's lawyer shot back by presenting a letter supposedly written to him by businessman Daniel Molkandov, in which the former MK was ordered to pay Molkandov NIS 1.9 million, supposdely as an extortion.

The former MK was investigated on suspicion of receiving bribes from a certain businessman while he was in office—that included sexual favors from at least one woman—while the MK supposedly reciprocated these favors by promoting the businessman's own interests. The police issued a statement, saying that as the investigation developed, "The suspicion of conducting a bribery offense and breach of trust by the former MK was substantially corroborated, so that this morning he was detained for questioning."

Police Superintendant Elisha Kogan claimed in court that "The suspect received various forms of bribery, including sexual bribes, and his actions constitute a severe damaging of the public's trust."

The former MK's lawyer also claimed that an unidentified person had called his client, introduced himself as Unit of International Crime Investigations Head Gadi Siso and demanded that the suspect pay the aforementioned NIS 1.9 million to Molkandov. After the former MK refused, his car was reportedly set on fire.

With the investigation underway, the police decided to request that the court agree to the former MK's continued arrest. The first complaint about him receiving bribes was brought to the police in January 2015 by the same businessman who claimed that he had in fact bribed the former MK while he was still in office.

The former MK was also made to meet the woman who supposedly provided the former MK with sexual favors. After reviewing the evidence, the judge ruled that he believes "There is reasonable evidence that links the suspect to the actions attributed to him. I found indiscrepancies between the answers he gave and the materials in the file, and as such I have decided to extend his arrest until Sunday."
