Police 'weeks away' from finishing Netanyahu investigation

Police commissioner refuses to clarify whether there is sufficient evidence to indict the prime minister, saying that decision lies with the State Attorney's Office; he also insists leaked information from investigation did not come from the police.

Police Commissioner Roni Alsheikh said Sunday that investigators were weeks away from finishing their probe into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"We'll need no more than a few weeks to bring the materials to the attorney general," Alsheikh told reporters.

Police is conducting a criminal investigation into two cases pertaining to the prime minister: one concerning suspicions Netanyahu and his family members received illicit gifts from wealthy businessmen, while the other concerns talks the prime minister had with Yedioth Ahronoth publisher Arnon Mozes seeking a change in coverage in the latter's newspaper.

"We're doing a very professional and responsible job to uncover the truth," Alsheikh said, noting that it was up to the State Attorney's Office to decide whether to file an indictment.

Alsheikh asserted that if the State Attorney's Office decides against filing an indictment, it would not be due to the lack of evidence. However, he declined to clarify whether there was sufficient evidence to indict the prime minister.

Insisting nothing leaked from the police, Alsheikh said he knew who was behind the information making its way to the press.

The commissioner added that any leaked information "invalidates the investigation."

Officials involved in the investigation said Netanyahu will likely be questioned against this week. At present, no time has been set for the questioning.
