The late Cpl. Gregai

IDF simulates fatal APC accident

As part of its investigation into the incident that killed Cpl. Viachislov Gregai whilst working on the vehicle, the army successfully manages to duplicate one plausible cause for the fatal blow.

The IDF simulated a portion of the accident that led to the death of a corporal three weeks ago in the Golan Heights as part of its investigation into the incident with an armored personnel carrier.

The army specifically sought reconstruct when a metal panel struck the spot where the late 20-year-old Viachislov Gregai had been standing. As in the actual accident, the APC's motor was running, and the rope used by the Golani Brigade soldier was attached to parts of the large vehicle's caterpillar track.

In the video obtained by Ynet, it appears that the iron ring that connected to the flexible cord was too weak and snapped into the late man's upper body with great force.

Sunday morning, Army Radio broadcast portions of the investigation. It revealed that the technical treatment kit that was being used in the incident had been banned for IDF use in recent years out of a fear that the rope would enter parts of the undercarriage and not be able to stand the pressure. The IDF said that this was but one avenue of investigation and that it was possible that other causes lead to Gregai's death.

The investigation has created disagreements between the Northern Command, under which the Golani Brigade operates, and the Technology and Logistics Branch, which is entrusted with maintaining the APCs. Before Gregai's death, the advanced armored vehicle had suffered technical problems before a central exercise of the 51st Battalion and was brought to base to be repaired by Gregai and his colleagues.

The young man stood at a point where he could view the entry to the APC's caterpillar track and where he received the fatal blow, being pronounced dead later at the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa. As a result, a number of IDF infantry divisions have decided to at least temporarily forbid open the caterpillar track without the approval of a battalion commander.

Regarding the ongoing investigation, the IDF released a statement in which it extended condolences to Gregai's family and said that it was prepared to change procedures if the results of the investigation into the incident indicated the need.
