Winter weather persists as Kinneret levels drop

Hail, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and wind continue to batter the country Monday, with inclement conditions expected to continue into Tuesday; police warn drivers drive cautiously.

Winter weather battered Israel again overnight Sunday, with heavy sleet and hail falling in the area of Or Akiva and Caesarea, resulting in large deposits on the road making for dangerous driving conditions. Police have urged motorists to exercise caution while driving.

Despite an active winter season with heavy rainfall, the Water Authority has warned that the Kinneret is at its lowest point in a decade. In mid-February, the height of winter, the water level is currently 27cm below the red line.

Poor weather continued into Monday with heavy rainfall from the north to the central Negev, accompanied by thunderstorms.

The downpours bring a risk of flooding to rivers in the Judean Hills, the Dead Sea and the Negev. Additionally, snow is continuing to fall in the Hermon.

Heavy winds have made the Mediterranean choppy and produced high waves.
