Trump wishes Muslims 'joyful' Ramadan, as Boehner calls his presidency an almost total disaster

The US president commemorates Ramadan by noting that it 'strengthens awareness of our shared obligation to reject violence'; Trump's wishes come as former US House speaker Boehner notes his time as president has been terrible in all but foreign policy.

The White House issued a statement from US President Donald Trump on Friday, where he wishes "all Muslims a joyful Ramadan" as they begin the traditional month-long fast.

"At its core, the spirit of Ramadan strengthens awareness of our shared obligation to reject violence, to pursue peace, and to give to those in need who are suffering from poverty or conflict," the message read.

Stressing his decision to begin his first presidential trip in a Muslim-majority country, Trump's statement continued by saying, "On my recent visit to Saudi Arabia, I had the honor of meeting with the leaders of more than 50 Muslim nations. There, in the land of the two holiest sites in the Muslim world, we gathered to deliver together an emphatic message of partnership for the sake of peace, security, and prosperity for our countries and for the world.

"I reiterate my message delivered in Riyadh: America will always stand with our partners against terrorism and the ideology that fuels it. During this month of Ramadan, let us be resolved to spare no measure so that we may ensure that future generations will be free of this scourge and able to worship and commune in peace."

Meanwhile, former US House speaker John Boehner has publicly stated that President Trump's time in office has been a "complete disaster," except when it comes to his foreign policy.

Energy publication Rigzone reported that while speaking at an energy conference in Houston on Thursday, Boehner praised Trump for his approach abroad and for being aggressive about fighting ISIS militants.

However, Boehner said that everything else Trump has done in office has been a complete disaster. He added that Trump is still learning how to be president.

The former House speaker said he's been friends with Trump for 15 years, but that he still has a hard time seeing him as president. He also said Trump should not be allowed to tweet overnight.

David Schnittger, a spokesman for Boehner, confirmed the comments.
