Taxi tender cancellation to lower fares from Ben-Gurion Airport

The Hadar Lod taxi station decides not to participate in the tender for the operation of taxi services at Ben Gurion Airport, resulting in the company to lose its exclusivity at airport; starting Tuesday at 12:01am, every taxi company will be permitted to pick up passengers from the airport.

All taxis from any company will be able to enter Ben-Gurion Airport and pick up passengers starting Tuesday at 12:01am after the Hadar taxis airport tender was canceled following a dispute between Hadar and its partner in the tender, Gett.

Following the business dispute and the expected damage to employee wages, Hadar informed the Airport Authority that it would not sign the tender documents for the operation of taxis at Ben-Gurion Airport.

The Airports Authority announced that during this period, it would not collect the NIS 5 franchise fee from taxi drivers.

In addition, the Authority will make available to the public an array of free busses during rush hours, when there's a shortage of taxis. The Israel Railways will also increase the number of trains going out of Ben-Gurion Airport, and the IAA will ensure that the drivers collect prices according to the law: "As part of the preparations, service attendants will be recruited to provide the passengers with the price list of cab fares, and where there is no price list, the attendants will request the driver to turn on the meter," the IAA said.

"The franchise fee in the tender was reduced by 30% so the consumer pockets the profit. Much like in every international airport in the world, taxi companies in the concession provide service that will be available to passengers, under supervision as they operate by authorization. This enables high-quality service to passengers and tourists from Ben-Gurion Airport, available at any time and at any frequency."

Saturday night, during a special night time discussion, the owners of Hadar Lod taxis voted against giving a 31% discount on travel from Ben-Gurion Airport, which was promised by Gett (formerly Get Taxi) who entered a tender at Ben Gurion Airport with Hadar Lod. The station already provides a similar discount on trips to Ben Gurion Airport, from certain cities.

"The Hadar-Lod drivers are the most important asset of the company and we will not allow anyone to harm them," said Menachem Bar-Haim, CEO of the Hadar-Lod taxi station. "Regrettably, Gett retracted all prior agreements, and therefore we had no choice but to inform the Airports Authority this morning that Hadar Lod would not sign the tender documents for the operation of taxi services from Ben-Gurion Airport.

"Gett has offered a 31 percent discount on the Ministry of Transportation's travel tariff, but we know the work at the airport and know that this is unrealistic. There is no reason to have the lowest rates in the country at Ben Gurion Airport of all places, at the expense of the drivers. There is room to examine a proportionate reduction in the fares from Ben-Gurion Airport."

On Friday, the shareholders voted for the discount after claiming that they had been threatened with personal lawsuits, but the vote was by a minority of shareholders. All the taxi drivers are happy about the move to open Ben-Gurion Airport for everyone, but the question of whether it will benefit consumers remains open.
