Likud scold Bennett's 'irresponsible' attacks on PM

Responding to accusations by Bayit Yehudi leader that Netanyahu 'folded' in Temple Mount crisis and compromised Israeli security, Likud berates Bennett’s 'childish' tweets, charges statements jeopardize safety of Israeli civilians.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party attacked his coalition partner Naftali Bennett (Bayit Yehudi) Friday morning over a statement issued by his party the previous night charging that the removal of all recently installed security measures at the Temple Mount constituted a “danger to Israel’s security.”

“If there is anything that endangers Israeli security it is people who sit in the Security Cabinet and the compass that guides them is not the good of Israeli civilians but their (personal gain—ed) and the headlines that follow,” the Likud statement began before turning to chastise Bennett directly.

“Bennett, who initially supported the removal of the metal detectors, and after the decision even pompously declared he supported the prime minister, didn’t stand for more than a minute and a half under the pressure of the media and public opinion,” it continued.

The statement emphasized that Israeli security is not a matter of populism and political interests, but rather “a sacred principle. Anyone who turns it, in a childish and irresponsible manner, to a platform of tweets jeopardizes Israeli security more than anything else.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu will continue to lead Israeli security in a determined and responsible fashion. The only factor that concerns him is the security of Israeli civilians,” it said.

He would continue to lead, it concluded, “just as he has done throughout the years of his tenure.”

After Israel removed all remaining security facilities from the Temple Mount on Thursday morning, Bennett’s party indirectly lashed out at the prime minister. “All the declarations over the last few days are not helpful,” it said before accusing the prime minister of folding.

“The damage caused by the folding and the severe harm caused to security must be rectified by a determined war against terror and not with words,” the party statement read. “We must stop collapsing and giving prizes for terror.”
