Brazil to extradite Israeli convicted of murdering Palestinian

Brazil's Supreme Court accedes to Israel extradition request for Yehoshua Elitzur, convicted of murdering Sael Jabara al-Shatiya in '04; Elitzur fled to Brazil in '04 and was arrested in '15.

Brazil's Supreme Court acceded to an Israeli request on Wednesday to extradite Yehoshua Elitzur back to Israel for the 2004 murder of Sael Jabara al-Shatiya.

In September 2004, Elitzur was traveling near Elon Moreh and noticed al-Shatiya traveling in a van. According to the indictment, Elitzur flagged down al-Shatiya and exited his vehicle brandishing an M-16 rifle. When al-Shatiya did not stop, Elitzur opened fire and killed him.

Elitzur was placed under house arrest and eventually convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder. However, he managed to flee Israel to Germany, where he eventually made his way to Brazil.

According to Brazilian authorities, Elitzur entered the country with false papers and resided there until 2015, where he was finally arrested by Brazilian police after Interpol issued an international arrest warrant for him.
