Three 11-year-old children were injured Sunday when a grenade they were playing with exploded in an entrance to a building in Elad.
The children were taken to the Beilinson Hospital at the Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva, which later said one child was in serious condition and will have to undergo surgery, while the remaining two were in moderate condition and will be transferred to the Schneider Children's Medical Center.
An initial inquiry by police and bomb squad experts on the scene found the three children were playing with a grenade intended for an M203 grenade launcher, which went off.
Shrapnel from the grenade hit one of the building's gas canisters, prompting the evacuation of the building's tenants.
Police are investigating how the grenade came into the children's possession. "We appeal to the public: anyone in possession of armaments, in whole or in part, is required to contact or report it to the police," a police statement said.
