Ray's incident with the soldier checking out his car is similar to something that happened to my mother, a white woman in her 80's at the time. One evening, she was being driven somewhere by her caretaker, a middle-aged African-American woman. Suddenly, they were pulled over by a police officer. My mother knew that no traffic rules had been violated, so when the officer walked over and peered into the car at the two of them, my mother, who was always very sensitive to anything she perceived as being racist, looked him straight in the face and said "You think she's trying to kidnap me or something, don't you?" The officer laughed and waved them on. This took place in a New York suburb, so I guess people can jump to the wrong conclusion almost anywhere.
