1. Embargo
Adam ,   UK   (11.15.05)
There might be lift on the embargo but will Saudi really do any meaningful trade with Israel anyway? Public and Arab political opinion is too strong for this state to consider any real normal trade relation with the Jewish state. Meaningless act designed to help Saudi into the WTO club.
2. Indeed it's incitment ...
Jul ,   Paris   (11.15.05)
... that should be banned to enter WTO if a real change is desired. But a 60 year long campaign of smearing from the arab countries has postponed regional peace for 2 or 3 generations at least.
3. 150 lashes and 40 months in jail for praising Jews
Josh ,   NYC   (11.15.05)
is what a teacher in Saudi Arabia just got courtesy of the Saudi justice system. I think this is a bit more indicative, no?
4. WTO & Saudi Exports??
Caro ,   Beaver,Pa.   (11.16.05)
What does Saudi Arabia need with something it cannot use? Oil is all they export and they have not needed the WTO to do so.Maybe I am ignorant of the strides the Saudi's have been making in free enteprise and manufacturing and the availability of it's citizenry to enjoy the fruits of their independent labors.Or, is it still the same old patrimony from the oil revenues and they need an excuse to lighten up on Israel before they get their ass kicked?
5. #3 - actually it was 750 lashes for OPPOSING TERRORISM
Howard ,   Pacific Coast, USA   (11.16.05)
The teacher may or may not have called non-Muslims human beings, but there is more to it than that. The guy was a high school chemistry teacher. He was so distressed by al-Qaeda's 2003 bombing of the al-Hamra compound in Riyadh, that he started speaking out against terrorism. He "talked to students about terrorism and its consequences." He put up anti-terrorism signs at the school. As a result, some of the Islamic Studies teachers started bad-mouthing him and went so far as to visit the homes of students to tell them not to trust him. The teacher says that when some of the students failed the monthly chemistry test, some of the Islamic Studies teachers used their anger and convinced them to sue him. They accused him of "mocking Islam, favoring Jews and Christians, and preventing students from performing ablutions." He was also charged with studying witchcraft, and with mocking people who have beards (although he, himself, has a beard). In the trial, the teacher's lawyer was not recognized. The accused was not allowed to cross-examine the accusers. And only the accusers were permitted to testify (no other witnesses were called). The teacher has been sentenced to be flogged repeatedly in the public marketplace: 50 lashes per week times 15 weeks (750 lashes total). The case is being appealed. In the meantime, the man has been transferred out of the schools into a desk job. Apparently, someone who denounces terrorism is considered to be a "bad influence" on Saudi kids.
6. boycott
Hilda ,   US   (11.16.05)
Actually, Israeli goods have made their way into S.A. and other Arab countries. The process is to send it to Cypress , remove all the Israeli labels and send it on. They love Israeli products, and really need them but they just don;t want to know where they come from. So they contiue to play the game. Freedom of any kind and the Saudi is an oxymoron, They will promise anything but if they follow through that is another thing. But we know the world is blind because they want that oil so they will let even the devil join.
7. Saudi Arabia and the WTO
Leon Rosen ,   Israel   (11.27.05)
Does anyone really see trade relations between the Saudis and Israel?Paying lip service to the WTO's charter whilst having no intention to implement it, is just another islamofascist state's method to infiltrate the centers of power. Saudi support of terrorism is well known and until they change, or are changed, they should be kept at arms length.
