An insistence on territorial specificity is not and never has been a tenet of Zionism. Establishment of a homeland of Jews (pre-Israel) and defense of the homeland of Jews (post-1948) are the core precepts on which Zionism is based. If you look at the plans of early Zionists, you can see that they considered several locations other than haAretz as the site of the said homeland.
