1. DON'T WORRY
KAPARA   (12.20.05)
DON'T WORRY, MY RABBI AND AHMANDINEJAD'S MULLAH ARE GOING TO SIT DOWN TOGETHER, THEY WILL KIBITZ, DRINK TEA, EAT HUMMUS, AND FIGURE OUT A WAY TO COMPROMISE AND BE FRIENDS AND FIGURE OUT WAYS TO MAKE A BETTER LIFE FOR OUR PEOPLES. OOPS, I JUST WOKE UP FROM MY DREAM.
2. It's not a sin to be retarded
Stephen ,   Raleigh   (12.20.05)
Yesterday the President of Iran outlawed western music. Tomorrow I'm sure he'll declare the earth is flat. But we should not think that crazy stupid people with god complexes aren't also capable of mass murder. They are. Self appointed messiahs always are. We should be very worried what an unfettered madman says and does.
3. Reminds me of Ronald Reagan
Seth ,   Washington, DC   (12.20.05)
During his presidency, he went on record as expecting Armageddon in his lifetime. However, Ahmadinejad seems far crazier and more dangerous than Reagan.

5. make a dream a reality
shawn ,   u.s.   (12.20.05)
dear kapara! it is very possible some day the two countries can compromise and be friends. they had done it once before and besides there are historical precedence among nations that once were at each others throat to the point of annihilation. e.g u.s and japan or germany and the jewish nation but now not only they are not enemies but they have become each others natural allies. it will take very bold and courageous steps by leaders of both countries to creat an atmosphere of peace for the region and by extension the world. as far back as i can remember this animosty between iran and israel started right after the iranian revolution and both sides are responsible for it. israel thinking that since it supported the previous regime, naturally she should oppose the revolutionary iran especially since iran looking for a role in the mideast took up the banner of the palestinian cause. if iran would have been taken more seriously sooner, by atleast two decades and was included in the peace talks right along side of egypt, jordan etc. then i think the present enmity would have not reached this level. whether we like it or not iran has tremendous following and influence in the region especially among the populous and the opposition groups in the countries of the region with weak governments. therefore only through genuine dialogue with iran ,this influence can be harnessed for peace and tranquillity in the region and beyond. i could continue for few more hours but my little boy won't let me and he is webbing me like spiderman. by the way i don't think the mullahs or ahmadinejad like humus, offer him something more persian like khoreshteh fesenjoon!
6. Iranian Pres Certainly believes in the Mahdi
Adina kutnicki ,   NJ   (12.20.05)
Of course what this writer states is the reality of the situation. Tragically if it is admitted that the iranian Presient is indeed delusional, then their would be no excuse not to make sure that Iran is stopped before they get their muclear bomb. . Also, it would open the pandora's box that Muslim's actually worship at the altar of genocide. This is too impolitic for many to talk about. There is no doubt that if Iran gets the bomb they will use it. There is no escaping this reality, and their is no mutually assured destruction pact able to reach a stand off on. The crazies in Iran are seeking the end time scenario.
7. SHAWN
KAPARA   (12.20.05)
SHAWN, IT IS NICE TO HAVE DREAMS, BUT THE REALITY IS THAT IRAN IS THE PROBLEM, NOT ISRAEL. YOU PUT THE BURDEN SQUARELY ON ISRAEL. THAT IS WRONG. IF IRAN OFFERED AN OLIVE BRANCH ISRAEL WOULD GRAB AT IT IN A HURRY. AS IRAN MOVES BACKWARD AND MODERN MILITARY TECHNOLOGY MOVES FORWARD THERE IS NOT MUCH LONGER THAT ISRAEL CAN WAIT. HOW DO YOU HAVE GENUINE DIALOGUE WITH SOMEONE THAT WANTS YOU EITHER WIPED OFF THE MAP OR ETHNICALLY CLEANSED TO ALASKA? THE LEADER OF IRAN IS NOT COURAGEOUS, HE IS NOT A FORWARD THINKER, THERE IS NO DREAM OF PEACE WITH HIM. TO WAIT FOR IRAN TO MOVE FORWARD COULD RESULT IN THE DESTRUCTION OF ISRAEL. NO DREAMS HERE, JUST NIGHTMARES.
8. Take Iran seriously lol

9. M.A.D. can play a role.
Paul E ,   California   (12.20.05)
Irans blustering president wants to see his vision rule the world, so I would wager that he is full of self preservation and wants live. In the west we should hold Iran fully responsible for any WMD that is used on any western target. When I mean responsible I do mean a eye for a eye. Once city of ours for one fo thiers. Pick ones with holy sites to make the point that all muslims will suffer the price for not policing thier own. If more than one wmd is used then the whole country should be put to the torch as a lesson to every rogue nation.
10. wiping out Iran's nuclear plants
mike ,   new york   (12.20.05)
If only US could loan IAF a few B-2 Spirits for a few hours, all this nonsense of sitting around and discussing how crazy he is would be pointless. There would be no problem, period. History time and time again shows us the tragic consequences of sitting around and appeasing madmen when a call for action is required. In Churchill's own words, "Those that appease the crocodile, will simply be eaten last"
11. The total cold war
Henry James ,   US   (12.20.05)
One simple way to interpret Khomeinist anti-Israeli fantasies is to compare them with N.Korean position. Apparently, both Kim and Ahmadinejad reject two models of their relationship with the West: -- Active military confrontation - they don't want to be destroyed. -- Any meaningful diplomatic process - they find breaking the iron curtain counterproductive. Domestically, the goal is to suppress local pro-Westerners.
So, their apparent goal is a total no-detente cold war. 50 years ago, N.Koreans discovered the ingenious way to fight such war and practice it ever since. What they do is combination of hostile black PR operations with demonstrations of "good will". For example, they can call top US official "psychotic" and then agree for the next round of multilateral talks. However, in the end, all this comes to nothing - as designed. Now Ahmadinejad does exacty the same, but using specifically Khomeinist ideological language. Knowing for sure that "Holocaust denial" excludes any meaningful negotiations with the West, he makes statements to this end followed by "good will" gestures. Naturally, the West rejects these moves. On the next step, the Khomeinists claim that they "want peace" while Westerners are "warmongers", etc, etc. On the Western side, the strategy of total cold war poses two major challenges: -- Historical blackout. For neocons, Korean fight against the Japanese and civil war that followed is completely non-existent. Even less they want to remember any non-Israeli views of the post-WW2 period in the ME and 1948 events. -- Irrelevant current news coverage. Each move is systematically taken out of context and heavily misrepresented. What is to be done? All I can think about is quality historical and news analysis. Penetrating multiple layers of misrepresentation is not easy. 1. Spiegel. Michael Scott Moore. 12. Understanding Iranian Leaders for idiots
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (12.20.05)
I'm all for my jewish friends coming to Alaska. You are all welcome. This nutty boy from Iran, whom I will refer to as Kid Nutty ,hasn't a sane synnapse in his noggin. He can't be negotiated with because he clearly believes he is God, or the messenger of God, and his new era. Hitler, the leader of Korea, Japan, and so forth ,are, and were, all nuts. You can't negotiate with nuts. All you can do is crack them. I suggest Israel attack Kid Nutty's country, the sooner the better. He needs a dose of reality just as Hitler, and the Japanese, needed a wake up call, during World War Two. He will only get stronger, acquire Gods weapons, in his opinion, and use them on the Jews. Without a second thought he will use nuclear weapons on the country of Israel. Israel better wake up soon. This guy is F**KING CRAZIER THAN SH*T. Kid Nutty has a hard on, for killing as many Jews as he can get away with. Take him out before he kills all of you while you are sleeping. I wouldn't want to watch the flesh melt off my body, just because my government couldn't handle the political fallout from Europeans, and possibly the United States. Protect yourselves---no one else will. Hasn't history proved that already.
13. MAD only works if leaders are sane & self-interested
Howard ,   Pacific Coast, USA   (12.21.05)
The problem with relying on MAD in the case of Iran is that the Iranian leadership -- and not just Iran's fruitcake president -- are unstable religious zealots who think that mass martyrdom is a GOOD thing. Remember how they fought their Iraq war: human wave tactics, resulting in massive casualties on their side. This is how the Iranian leadership understands warfare. So-called "moderate" Rafsanjani said in 2001 that Israel could be wiped out with one nuclear attack, but any Israeli response would "only do damage in the Muslim world." Translation: the human cost of a nuclear war between Israel and Iran would be acceptable to him. If you have insane religious zealots who are not only ecstatically happy to massacre Israeli civilians (via terrorism or nukes), but in order to do so are also willing to massacre their own civilians, MAD falls apart.

15. kapara and others
shawn ,   u.s.   (12.21.05)
please read my above remarks to grasp the essence of it . from the tone of your writting i can tell you are at great distress and rightly so. every single gov't in the region is responsible for the present situation and they are incompetent at solving the present dilema if they continue with the same formula over. you suggested "if iran offers an olive branch to israel..." and "the leader of iran is not couragous and not a forward thinker". why not israel's leaders be couragous enough and offer that olive branch and show the iranian leadership how forward thinking and couragous they are! i don't wish to sound rediculous but you would be surprised to find out how positive the reaction in iran would be if one day the israeli prime minister goes "LIVE" on world wide television and extends an "olive branch" to the leadership of iran. but before even being able to hold that olive branch you have to have a "seed" a metaphor for honest passion for peace. unfortunatlly it is hard for me to see that under these circumstances. but i'm hopeful. only through well intentioned dialogue such as what we are having in this forum, especially among ordinary citizens this calamitous circumstance can change and eventually make the gov'ts to listen. as an example it only took iranian gov't few years to realize how deeply the iranian populace desire good relations with the united states and no matter what the gov't does or say the eagerness is there among the ordinary people, even though it seems they have certain grievances against former u.s administrations e.g. support of sadam during iran/iraq war especially when he used chemical weapons against the iranians. and u.s. for its part had realized the importence of iran in the stability of the region and beyond as a whole. therefore for a while both u.s and iran had toned down their rethoric against each other and you could hear sentences like "what ever the palestians accept iranian gov't will welcome". or former secretary of state albright, and even former president clinton acknowledged that there had been some mistakes in the past by former u.s. administration inregards to iran. the outcome of these jestures could have been eventual diplomatic relations between the u.s. and iran, which in return would have been beneficial to israel as well . but unfortunatly all we could hear was voices of opposition to this prospect from israeli gov't. because historically iran is a natural ally of the united states and this is hard for the region to swallow whether it is israel or the arabs. so therefore israel has a hard time to see a rival in influence and prestige in the region and among western gov'ts. but iran on the other hand, does not see israel as a rival, since iran knows historically, culturaly, economically and politcally its position in the region. and it is this position that can be a stabilizing factor in the mideast and beyond.sadly iran, the west and israel lost the opportunity during the eight years of former iranian president khatami's tenure to resolve the major issues not only of middle east but also grievances that exist between the west and the muslim world and by extension israel. (by the way israeli president moshe katsav and khatami were born in the same town yazd in iran very famous for its delicious pastery).hopefully there will be other opportunities but SOO N. thank you again for reading these thoughts and if you celebrate hanukkah i extend my hanukka greetings to you. in the end i have a request from the moderator of this forum, in order to keep a high standard that this forum deserves please stick to your rules and do not publish responses that include incitement, slander etc...such as certain comments against muslims, and others, it makes this forum feel like al-jazeera or yahoo news discussion section. again happy holidays everyone and thank you.

gm ,   south africa   (01.31.06)
You guys are so short-sighted. Muslim radicals want world domination and mass conversion to Islam. Jews just want to return to their homeland and live in peace with world acceptance of Israel (a very tiny piece of land) as a Jewish homeland country. We don't want oil, we don't want iraq, iran, afghanistan, lebanon, jordan, egypt, syria, saudi arabia, turkey, pakistan, morroco, UAE etc. The entire world is up in arms because 'palestinians' want a piece of land that israel won in a defensive war against Jordan and Egypt and you think you're safe if you side with these radicals. In the end good always triumphs and you will get stabbed in the back, because you are cowards.
