1. So what are Sharons characteristics ??
Nachm Sanow ,   USA   (12.22.05)
Yesterday he is pro settelments the architect of settlements says they are needed for security ??? today the very settlements that he build he tears down costing the country financial havoc causing the people who trusted him angish aggravation and .... Point is he is a human being and changes his ideas based on pure nonesense (Getting a smile from Condi or Bush) while placing the entire Israel in Jepordy. Very soon the Jewish People will be getting a leader that will not be intimidated by anyone and will rule the country based on Torah and Mitzvoth which is not subject to change. that will be Melech Hamoshiach and the country will be at peace at last. Lets pray and return to Almighty by following his path Torah and Mitzvoth to hasten the cominh of Melech Hamoshiach.
2. A lack of committment to democracy
Ilan ,   Ariel   (12.22.05)
Our political leadership from Meretz to Likud all work on the basis of "elimination lists" in order to silence their critics within their own parties. If politicians can't accept dissent from within, how much more are they afraid of the exchange of ideas between parties. To be Israeli is to be too insecure of your own beliefs to hear the other side. A serious cultural flaw.
3. Well-written
Steve ,   USA   (12.22.05)
B"H I do not necessarily agree with the viewpoint set fourth, but I do think the viewpoint is very well presented. This is wonderful writing form, and very interesting to me! As for content, that may be a separate point. Thank you for publishing this article.
4. the popularity of Sharon
RobertK ,   Jerusalem   (12.23.05)
is extremely worrisome. People understand that he's a one-man show and that he's corrupt and steamrolls his way through democratic norms, but they love him anyway. This is part of the collapse of Israeli morale and pride.
5. Sharon should retire
Hilda ,   US   (12.23.05)
Time for Sharon and Peres too, to retire to a Moshav Zkainim, Old Age home where they can be cared for and Israel can again be safe.
6. hit the nail
Aaron ,   Israel   (12.23.05)
Great article, I am a right wing person who would much rather have Amir peretz than olmert, mofaz et al. I don't like Sharons tactics but at least he is a leader, the worms who followed him to kadima are achorah. Aaron
7. The Author Is Generous In Calling Israel An Autocracy
(12.24.05)
Anyone who hasn't been in a coma would realize that Israel is nothing like a western democracy. To call it an autocracy is being very generous indeed. This is the reason why Sharon was able to campaign on one platform and initiate another. He knows very well that he is not accountable to the public, nor are the MK's. Why? They are only accountable to corrupt party lists. This is how Sharon was able to fire anyone who didn't agree with disengagement, threaten anyone with jail for "incitement" and was able to stop people from going to legitimate democratic protests, which are the hallmark of democracies. Furthermore, the whole system is rife with autocratic features. There is NO separation of powers. The Supreme Court elects its own judges. How twisted is that ! As for the Knesset, they have no fear of a constituency backlash and that is why they too can ignore the peoples wishes. In no fashion does this gov't represent the people - they merely dictate by fiat and whim. Furthermore, how disgraceful is it to call Israel a democracy when they do not even have a constitution enshrining human/civil rights etc,??
8. Sharon is corrupt and must not WIN!
Jacqueline ,   usa   (12.25.05)
Sharon is a corrupt arav ra. He has corrupted not only himself, but anyone that becomes attached. The morale, as someone else has mentioned on this page, has gone down and that is why he appears to be ahead in this race. I truly do not believe he will become the PM again, as the G-d above will bring him down, as should be. He has caused to many tears and fears in his time towards his people. Sharon must be brought down and Kadima must come down with him. All in Kadima are corrupt and care less about the Israeli people. They care only about their own egos, and physical endeavors. Sharon will answer to H-shem as to why he betrayed Him and His beloved Israel. I personally would not want to be in his boots. Jacqueline
