8. The penny dropped / for No. 2
Amada ,   Petach Tikva   (02.06.06)
Yes, this is a real English expression. It originates from putting a penny into a slot machine (or a public loo). Once the penny has dropped, something is supposed to have dawned on you, like the way its said in Hebrew. By the way, and just FYI, the expression : pa'am slishit - glida" is an incorrect translation. In English it's "3rd time, and I'll scream". I'll scream sounds like icecream...." Other than that, I agree that this is really an interesting article. It should be printed in a British newspaper.

"the penny has dropped" may be a British-English saying, but it certainly isn't an American one. I've also never heard "3rd time, and I'll scream". So I'm assuming that must be British-English as well. I have worked in Journalism for years and never heard either. The article is a good one though.

IT IS JUST A CARTOON. I understand they may feel angry, sadened, or even down right offended. But, what will acting like this prove? It only proves the cartoonists right.

16. Response to "The Penny Has Dropped"
Stephen ,   Virginia, USA   (02.06.06)
The author is absolutely correct. I would add that the future of not only Judaism and Christianity is threatened, but that of secular Western Democracy by Islamic Fundamentalism, if the Western nations do not wake up. For the first time secularism is begin to see, but not fully comprehend the threats posed by Islam. Islamic Fundamentalism cannot, but its own historical and contemporary actions co-exist (equally and freely) with other religious views and western concepts of democracy. I applaud Dan Schueftan FOR HIS BRAVE STANCE in the face of genocidal extremism.
17. It's Been Going On For a Long Time
e ,   u   (02.06.06)
The threats against teachers is nothing new. I’ve had personal experience with this. I was attending a community college in Arizona over 20 years ago and witnessed such actions first hand. The teacher of our Political Science call was handing out final grades. We had four students from No Countryland (I don’t know what else to call it since it does not exist). They were all given F’s as they only took two tests that semester, did no homework and attended maybe half the classes. Outraged by their grades, even after the professor explained his basis for the grades, one of them loudly demanded, “Are there any Jews in this class?”. I was not sure what was coming, but I proudly raised my hand. “Change the grade”, I was ordered. When I tried to explain that I couldn’t, I’m just a student, I was shouted down that “Jews control everything”, “Jews have all the money and power”, and that it was my fault they received bad grades. If not for the fact that they were out numbered five to one in the class, I truly believe that I would have been assaulted. It’s obvious this type of behavior has been going on for a long time and shows no sign of abating. These radicals have made their minds up and will not let reality or the truth stand in their way. They just can’t see that violence and fear is not how you gain acceptance in the world.

nunu ,   Tel Aviv   (02.06.06)
It's very simple, noone stands up against this terrorizing attitude of the Arabs, because.....guess what ? Because they are afraid of them and why???? OIL>>>>OIL>>>>OIL It is all a matter of interest, slowly all the Europeans are appologizing and again a victory for the Arabs...
20. They are EDITORIAL Cartoons, Not Racist Cartoons
Chaim   (02.06.06)
So true. Newspapers, especially in the editorial section, publish many things which are "insensitive" to others - if someone doesn't find it offensive, it's not much of an editorial. Political cartoons are, by their nature, completely editorial and not news. In the instant case, they were not even anti-Muslim, they were showing the corruption of an ideology. Why can't an editorial cartoonist challenge the idea that suicide bombers are rewarded with martyrdom by showing Muhammed saying that they've run out of virgins, so don't become a shahid? Was that message insensitive? Haven't we seen a critique of that ideology in the pages of most newspapers? Showing Muhammed with a bomb in his turban is upsetting because it has become true - wackos have hijacked Islam (or perhaps it is now the nature of Islam) - but nevertheless, people are killing innocents while citing Koran as their influence. To those who agree with the protestors - if you believe in censorship so much, censor yourself

Jon   (02.06.06)
The free world U are talking about won't allow the US to go alone in war against another country. I doubt if U 'll shut up if some body makes some cartoons to show U naked in some way. Morteover, any body would be bring to court if he doubted about the Holocost stuff which I am peersonally do not buy very much.Insulting religion is not acceptable under any term, we are Muslim are not permitted by our islamic values to insult any prophet but the thugs like U who encourages gays are better to shut up.I am not with the violant actions but U are the driving force for these action since these idiots has hurted the feeling for the muslims while I doubt if U have ever feel these things...
23. A lot of hatred here!
(02.06.06)
Of course i see a lot of hatred towards arabs and muslims here. But here is reality: they are not as bad as Westerners are. Westerners (for example Germans, British, Americans, French, Holland, Portuguese) all occupied, killed, mutilated, robbed other nations. The new form of that is Israel. As an occupier to Arab land. Americans and Israel will, inevitably, lose their wars against muslims. Muslims will win the war for a simple reason. They are honest, they are strong, they care about the good and the bad, not the rich and the poor. America and Israel are in decline. Just watch.
24. It's rare when I agree with everything written in an article

Great job - I hope it will be published in newspapers throughout the west.
25. Dear #23 the only thing in decline for the past 500 years
(02.06.06)
Is the Arab Muslim world, and the last thing you can say about them is that they're honest.
26. To # 23 - Rich & Poor
Chaim   (02.06.06)
You wrote that, Muslims "care about the good and the bad, not the rich and the poor". You are half right. They do seem to care about the bad - they laud suicide bombers and other terrorists and are ready to cause civil unrest at the drop of a hat. You are also right in that they don't care about the poor, except to rob them - by example, look at the PA - billions of dollars are missing from the public coffers and are in private swiss accounts of Fatah "leaders" (who do care about the rich, because they are the rich in that society).

HONEST?!?!?!?! Name one honest Muslim.
28. PA/ISLAMISTS MAKE WAR ON ISRAEL'S G-D CREATOR OFTHE UNIVERSE
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (02.06.06)
WHERE is any MUSLIM RESPECT for RULER of the UNIVERSE, the G-D of ABRAHAM, ISAAC and JACOB? On March 27, 2002, at the Park Hotel in Netanya, terrorists targeted for murder Jews honoring and thanking G-D for His great mercy: Exodus 12:14 “you shall celebrate it as a feast to the L-RD” Exodus 12:42 “It is a night to be observed for the L-RD for having brought them out from the land of Egypt; this night is for the L-RD, to be observed by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations.” The Islamic homicide bomber murdered 30 Israelis as the Jews obeyed G-D, taking part in the Passover meal. 140 Jewish innocents were injured. The bomb was filled with nails and other metal pieces to maximize the suffering of survivors. On August 19, 2003, terrorists targeted for murder Jews who worship G-D - Giver of all life. The homicide bomber blew himself up on the bus as Jews returned from prayer at the Western wall-the Temple Mount, the holiest place on earth, is Judaism's holiest site. Jerusalem is mentioned over 800 times in the Bible, not once in the Koran. The gruesome attack-the bomb packed with metal pieces, killed 22 Jews and injured 134, many seriously. If Jesus Christ lived today, from the time Jesus was in his mother's womb, he would be targeted for murder by the Islamofascists for being a Jew living in his homeland of Israel. The Palestinian Authority hailed as heroes the terrorists who brutally murdered defenseless 8 months pregnant Jewish Gaza mother, Tali Hatuel, and four little daughters in Gush Katif in May 2004. In defiance of Israel's G-D, and massively breaking G-D's law given to Moses: "YOU SHALL NOT MURDER", the Palestinian Authority teach that murdering Jews is a religious obligation through their mosques, media and public education system. Islamic human bomb murderers of innocent Jews are revered and considered heroes. Broadcast from Gaza mosque, Oct 13 2000, Dr. Ahmad Abu Halabiya, on Palestinian Authority TV (transcribed by Memri): "Have no mercy on the Jews, no matter where they are, in any country. Fight them, wherever you are. Wherever you meet them, kill them. Wherever you are, kill those Jews and those Americans who are like them..."

John ,   USA   (02.06.06)
Decline? How would you characterize the muslim world? Condemning people to death over a cartoon seems like the doings of a "honest and strong people that care about good and bad." The muslim world isn't in decline due to the fact that it was never developed to begin with.
30. danish imams perverse manipulation
david ,   geneva   (02.06.06)
It now appears that 15 cartoons were shown in the middle east by danish imams wereas only 12 had been published in the Jyllands Posten. Three highly insulting drawings have been shown to islamic institutions and government there -with the 12 actually published on the 30th september- and presented as if having been published in european press. These three evil and insulting drawings have not and would not have been published under no circumstances by any european journal. It all looks like some sort of manipulation has occured and it now remains to understand by whom. These three drawings cannot even be called cartoons -for a description not suitable here see le monde 5-6 february-.
