1. Not again with Pollard!
John ,   Jerusalem   (02.10.06)
Hello people, he's guilty as all sin!! Let him serve the sentence that he earned by his crimes.
2. Pollard
O. Wells ,   England   (02.10.06)
Guilty of what John in Jerusalem ? of helping Israel?
3. 2- YES- but he was AMERICAN
Boy George. ,   USA   (02.10.06)
this is the issue- this SPY betrayed his COUNTRY- the land that was protecting him- now, we know, he was 'jewish' but thats his own problem- not AMERICAS- he should have declared his 'jewish/Israeli citizenship and NONE of this would be so crazy and important- what you 'jews' seem to forget- when you have dual loyalties- is that YOU WILL HURT ONE SIDE eventually- it just so happens that this SPY that was caught was PRETENDING to be a firend of the USA. GOD BLESS.
4. Guilty and morally deficient
Chip ,   Jerusalem   (02.10.06)
Yes, guilty of betraying his solemn pledge -- freely taken -- to maintain the confidentiality of information he was provided in order to do his job as a US Naval intelligence analyst. Amazing..and shameful..that Israel chose to purchase this information from a man who has such a morally deficient character, when it had many other methods to obtain the information. Even more shameful that many Israelis think his actions were honorable, despite the damage he did to other Jewish people working in the US Government.
5. crime of treason
John ,   Jerusalem   (02.10.06)
Thank you #3, my point exactly. Being a Jew doesn't give him the right to betray his country's secrets to help a foreign nation, friendly or not. Israelis and Jews can't seem to see that because of their bias. Pollard helped Israel, so his crimes are irrelevant? Totally wrong! Vannunu was also a spy who felt that what he was doing, exposing Israel's nuclear program, would serve the greater good by helping to curb nuclear proliferation. But because he hurt Israel, he is villified (and rightly so), but Pollard is not? ANY person who betrays the confidence and trust of their country by passing secret information to another country is guilty of treason, regardless of if it "is good for the Jews" or not. Sorry, but when it comes to the crime of treason, there's no difference between Pollard and Vannunu. But, Israelis and Jews will never seem to recognize that!
6. Free him now! 20 years are too much!
Tom   (02.10.06)
7. #3 Little boy George
Jerry ,   USA   (02.10.06)
Little boy george is screwing the United States royally. He is supporting a system where politician can "make an example" of someone by imposing an unconsititutional punishment. Murders, rapists, and others who sold information to other countries get lesser sentences. Our constitution provides for habeus corpus (being brought before a judge) and outlaws cruel and unusual punishment. The damage done by Pollard to the United States is zero. He merely exposed political consideration and inclinations as to whether to meet agreements to share that same information with an ally. He has never been convicted of espionage. The harm he has caused America is to expose its principle underpinnings to devaulation and degradation - no trial on charges for which he is being punished.
8. #1 #2 #3 #4
menachem ,   montreal   (02.10.06)
you're right and wrong. right - because it's true, pollard broke the law of his country. wrong - you can still show 'some' sympathy to him for a number of reasons. 1. he already paid a 'terrible' price for his actions, spending 20 years of his life in prison. 2. he had no 'intention' to harm anyone, but to help someone else. (you can't compare this to a spy who's intentions are to eventually use the information 'against' the country the info comes from). 3. mr. pollard is believed to be in bad health condition. one of you compared pollard to vaanunu, i'm really sorry but you must be totally out of mind to state so. vaanunu is an 'ideological' opposer of israel's different security measures, and he doesn't even hide his intentions to do damage to israel, he is motivated by 'hate' and sickness, in other words HE IS (STILL!) A "DANGEROUS" PERSON.
9. He was tried...
Steve ,   Tel Aviv   (02.10.06)
fairly and sentenced. He did the crime and must do the time. "No harm to the U.S.?" That's not for you to decide. Or him. Pollard is toxic -- Israel, and all Jews, should flee from defending him -- he cloaks himself in the Star and brings dishonor to both Israel and worldwide Jewry. He is one more reason for Jews everywhere to be suspect in the eyes of the world.
10. Is helping Israel really such a threat to the US?
(02.10.06)
11. There was never a charge or conviction for Treason.
josef cohen ,   bkk thailand   (02.10.06)
There was never a charge or conviction for Treason. Mr. Pollard was convicted of spying, not treason. Mr. Pollard was never chargerged with Treason which is a different crime for which he was prosecuted. Treason is spying or giving aid and assistance to the ENEMY! Israel is not an enemy of the US and is in fact routinely refered to as an Ally. There have been people convicted of Spying for enemy states such as the former USSR, which led to the death of agents and those assiting them. Mr. Pollard has never been accused of being complicit in the death or compromising of any agent, because the US Government refuses to explain the necessity of the harsh sentence. Mr. Pollard is serving a sentence that is far in excess of those who did cause death and compromised agents. Josef Cohen
12. Steve he was not fairly sentenced
josef cohen ,   bkk thailand   (02.10.06)
Steve he was not fairly sentenced. The government wanted information from him and promised a sentence in return for that Cooperation. The Government then broke their promise and and petioned for a different sentenceing in a hearing that was closed to the defence. I worked in the US at that time and personally I am sure the sentence was never about Mr. Pollards actions but a message to all the Jewish engineers and research people who work on classified defence projects. There was definitely a chilling effect at that time as we all were suddenly being conpicuosly having security checks. Although Jews are only maybe 1.5% of the population the research teams were almost without exception a minimum of 20% Jewish and many were all Jewish. It was always a big Joke that at Locheed, Hughes et al Rosh Ha Shana and Yom Kippur were paid holidays because so much of the staff were gone a workday wasn't practical. For consideration, Josef Cohen

14. #7 & #3
Alex ,   USA   (02.10.06)
#7 You are wrong, completely wrong. Pollard was indicted, tried, and found guilty in a court of law. In fact, he PLED guilty. There is no issue of habeas corpus. He was punished under federal punishment guidelines established by Congress so there is no cruel and unusual punishment issue: prison is the NORMAL punishment for crime in the US. #3 Pollard is being punished for what he he did. It is wrong to attribute to others of his religion any responsibility for his individual actions any more than I can be blamed for what an agnostic bank robber does. I may be an agnostic, but that does not make me a bank robber. Pollard deserves his time for his crime, but it is all personal and individual. Pollard is the one who is trying to make his religion the issue. DON'T fall into his trap.
15. there are americans spies in israel too
dor   (02.10.06)
16. Let him rot
Seth ,   Washington, DC   (02.10.06)
Pollard received lots of money from Israel and sold American secrets that eventually migrated to the Soviet Union. Pollard was no hero and he caused enormous damage.
17. Friends, Mr. Cohen?
Alex ,   USA   (02.10.06)
Which is a more serious betrayal, that from avowed enemies or that from avowed friends? I think it is obvious to anyone who has experienced betrayal from a friend that that is the more hurtful, the more despicable act. For those who believe that Israel is a friend to the US, their action in inducing a citizen and employee of the US to betray his trust for money should generate outrage, not apologies. For us others, who see in the Pollard affair merely continuing evidence that Israel is opposed to America's values and success as the Soviet Union was and the Islamofascists are, Pollard must stay in prison until the American public gets over this delusion that Israel is an "ally" of the US. The Israeli government plants bombs in our librairies (Lavon affair), sinks our ships and kills our sailors (USS Liberty), and sends spies into our midst (Pollard and Franklin). Some friend.
18. #9 He wasn't tried and conviced.
Jen   (02.10.06)
There was a plea bargain which the government violated. The whole legal argument is that his Arab attorney did not file a notice of appeal in time (coincidence?) thus the issue of the government's behavior wasn't even looked intoand he was never alled to appeal the sentence . However, the state never proved their case in court, as it is popularly assumed. The harsh sentence, totally out of line with similar cases, was based solely on the secret letter of Caspar Weinberger and all the evidenced in the case was supplied by the FBI agent who turned out to be a Russian spy.
19. HUNDREDS OF ISRAEL'S POW/MIAS & POLLARD BETRAYED & ABANDONED
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (02.10.06)
It is immoral and cruel that hundreds of Israel's brave POW/MIAs, including Ron Arad, and Pollard in the U.S. are left in prison, betrayed, abandoned, and cruelly tortured. At the same time, under intense American pressure, Israel has released THOUSANDS of terrorists from Israeli jails enabling the terrorists to rejoin the religious war against Israel. THE ONLY THING ISRAEL GETS IN RETURN IS A MASSIVE AND DEADLY INCREASE IN TERRORISM. Where are the human rights organizations???
20. U.S. CRUEL, UNJUST TREATMENT OF POLLARD SHOCKED EUROPEANS
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (02.10.06)
The European Parliament Resolution on Jonathan Pollard September 16, 1993 The European Parliament, 1. noting that Jonathan Pollard, then of the US Navy, was convicted in 1985 of passing classified information to Israel concerning the military activities of Iraq, Syria and other Middle Eastern nations, 2. noting also that the information dealt with the chemical, biological and nuclear arms build- up in these countries and that Pollard considered he had a moral duty to warn Israel of the developing massive threat to its security and to the lives of its people, 3. whereas Pollard has expressed remorse for his action, 4. whereas Pollard, who was not accused of treason, or of intending to harm the US, pleaded guilty under a plea bargain, and was thus convicted and sentenced, without a full trial, to life imprisonment, despite the Government's promise not to seek such a penalty, 5. noting that the sentence imposed on Pollard was grossly disproportionate to those imposed on others by US courts for supplying information to a friendly power (normally from two to four years), 6. shocked that most of Pollard's eight years in prison should have been spent in solitary confinement and underground, 7. astonished that Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, described by one of his Under-Secretaries for Defense as having had 'an almost visceral dislike of Israel', should have sent a message to the trial judge, one hour before the sentencing hearing, asking for the stiffest possible sentence commensurate with Pollard's 'treasonous' (sic) behavior, 8. noting however that Mr. Weinberger stated recently that he thought it was time that Mr. Pollard should be released; aware that Christian and Jewish organizations throughout the world have pleaded for the harsh sentence of life imprisonment to be commuted and that Judge Steve Williams wrote, in a dissenting opinion to an appellate court finding, that 'the government's conduct in this case resulted in a 'complete miscarriage of justice', 1. Urges the US Administration to commute Pollard's sentence to one of time served and to release him immediately; 2. Calls on EPC to intercede with the US government with this end in view; 3. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, EPC and the Government of the United States. Voted almost unanimously on 16th September 1993. 21. POLLARD'S "SIN": HE PERMITTED ISRAEL TO ACT IN ITS DEFENSE

23. No early release likely
wolfram ,   usa   (02.10.06)
Pollard's sentence was excessive; but then, so are almost all sentences under the present US "justice " system. He will probably receive the full punishment, however, because of a number of extralegal factors: 1) His own arrogance. Defendants who want mercy must humiliate themselves before the court. 2) The shrillness of his defense "team," particularly of his wife, which can only further alienate his jailers. 3) The perception that, once released, he will be rewarded and lionized by the crackpot fringe in Israel. Who wants an MK Pollard?
24. Good points #23

Wolfram makes a very good point - Crying 'anti-Semitism' in U.S. Federal Court doesn't fly very far.

Alex ,   USA   (02.11.06)
I see. HE chose an "Arab" attorney. WHO of course failed to represent him properly. Advised Pollard to plead GUILTY out of the counsel's anti-Semitic prejudice. IF ONLY there had been a single Jewish lawyer in the US, just one. Then perhaps there might have been an advocate who might have represented Pollard adequately and all would have been well. Obvious. Of course. Only Arabs are allowed to be lawyers in the US. That is a well known fact. Christians and Jews are known to be disadvantaged in the US legal system because they must rely on Moslem lawyers. Which explains why most of the people in prison in the US are Christians and Jews. And only lawyers are allowed to become judges so it is inevitable that all the judges are Moslems too. And the alternate reality you reside in in is called ?
26. Jonathan Pollard
James Richardson ,   San Diego USA   (02.11.06)
Jonathan Pollard took an oath to "uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America" when he was sworn into his job with the Pentagon. He did NOT take an oath to defend Israel NOR to spy for Israel. He is a loathsome traitor who should have been executed. The damage done to the United States by his treason was awesome. The only way he should ever get outside the prison walls is to be executed, cremated and to then have his ashes flushed down the nearest toilet. Such a fate should befall all traitors.
27. Pollard
Hilda ,   USA   (02.11.06)
Pollard is being imprisioned under the worst of circumstances. He is abused and maltreated and only because he is a Jew. Had he been an Arab he would have been released long ago . Unfortunately he will never receive justice in this world and I'm afraid he will have to wait until he gets to heaven. He is one of those unfortunate souls the lamed vovniks who are meant to suffer for the world. What is so sad is that even Israel has betrayed him
28. Pollard
R. Higgins ,   U.S.A   (02.11.06)
Anyone who believes Pollard is being treated unfairly is crazy. He got his just deserts if he had been spying and passing material that he knew he should not have done. And even Israel eventually acknowledged it's duplicitious dealings with him. So how can anyone proclaim his innocence? and to say that had he been an Arab he would have not suffered what he is suffering now is really ludicrous. Had he been an Arab he would have gotten even longer time and maybe even executed. With all the anti Arab feeling in the U.S. we would have demanded his scalp. Really he is getting kid glove treatment.
29. Couple of points
Bozo ,   USA   (02.13.06)
1) Judges are NOT bound by plea bargain agreements. It is only a recommendation of the prosecutor. 2) Anyone interested in having their plea bargain agreement upheld should NOT have his wife give a pre-sentencing 60 minutes interview making statements like "I feel my husband and I did what we were expected to do, and what our moral obligation was as Jews, what our moral obligation was as human beings, and I have no regrets about that." since this probably doesn't exaclty fly well with the Judge. If Pollard did what he did for Israel then that's his decision, but he can't expect the US government to grant him clemency especially considering his lack of contrition. He was after all an American and broke the law and his oath as an American not an Israeli.
